How to measure for Curtains & Blinds

Find the right fit for your windows with our simple measuring guide.

Before you start

Use a steel tape measure for accurate measurements.

Measure in centimetres (cm) and clearly label your width and drop.

Measure every window separately, even if they look the same size.

Write down your measurements and double-check them before choosing a size.

Width is the measurement from side to side.

Drop is the measurement from the top to your preferred finishing point.

How to Measure Readymade Curtains

Start with your curtain track or the position where you plan to install it.

You Already Have a Curtain Track

Step 1 - Measure the Width

Measure the full length of your existing curtain track, from one end to end.

Record this as your track width. Measure the track itself, rather than just the window opening.

Step 2 - Measure the Drop

Measure from the top of the track down to where you would like your curtains to finish.

For a floor-length finish, aim for the curtains to sit just above the floor.

You Don't Have a Curtain Track

Step 1 - Measure the Width

Measure the width of your window, then allow extra space on both sides for the curtains to extend beyond the window.

  • 20–30cm on each side for smaller windows.
  • 30–50cm on each side for larger windows.

Check that there is enough wall space for your planned track position.

Step 2 - Measure the Drop

As a starting point, plan your track approximately 5–10cm above the window.

Measure from the planned hanging position down to where you would like the curtains to finish. Check the measurement against the available curtain drops.

Tip: Choose your curtain style and drop before finalising the track position.

Inside Mount

Measuring Within the Window Frame

Step 1 — Measure the Width

Measure the inside width at the top, middle and bottom.

Record all three measurements and use the smallest width as your reference.

Step 2 — Measure the Drop

Measure the inside height on the left, middle and right. Check the product guide to confirm which drop measurement to use.

Step 3 — Check the Installation Space

Check the recess depth against the product’s installation requirements.

Look for window handles, locks or other obstacles that could affect the brackets or prevent the blind from moving freely.

Before choosing a size: Check whether the listed blind width includes the brackets or refers only to the fabric. Follow the product’s instructions for any fitting allowance, and do not make deductions unless instructed.

Outside Mount

Measuring Beyond the Window Frame

Step 1 — Measure the Coverage Width

Measure the full coverage width. Allow 5–10cm beyond each side of the window to reduce light gaps and improve privacy.

Step 2 — Measure the Drop

Choose where the top of the blind will be installed, then measure down to your preferred finishing point.

Allow 10–15cm of additional vertical coverage beyond the window opening where practical.

Step 3 — Check the Mounting Position

Make sure there is enough space for the brackets and check for handles, shelves or other obstacles.

Remember: Fabric width and overall blind width may differ. Check the product specifications to make sure the fabric provides the coverage you need.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between width and drop?

Width is the horizontal measurement from side to side. Drop is the vertical measurement from the hanging or installation point to where the curtain or blind will finish.
Should I measure the window or the curtain track?

For curtains, measure your existing track or your planned track width. For roller blinds, measure the inside recess or the outside coverage area, depending on your mounting choice.
Is curtain width measured per panel or per pair?

This depends on the product. Check the product description for the panel width, number of panels included and any recommended track-width range.
What if my measurements fall between two sizes?

Check the product’s sizing guide before choosing. If you are unsure, send us your measurements and the product you are considering so we can help you compare the options.
Should I make deductions for an inside-mount blind?

Only make deductions if the product’s measuring instructions specifically tell you to. Keep a record of your original recess measurements and check how the product’s listed size relates to the finished blind.
Does roller blind width include the brackets?

The width definition can vary by product. Check whether the listed measurement is the overall width, including brackets, or the fabric width before ordering.
